It Was Time To Go

A Poem By Ally Hella

It was time to go.

I packed my car and headed west.

I drove to my sister’s house,

and forget the rest.

Tears, hugs, screams and sorrow,

fear in our eyes as we dreaded tomorrow.

Family & friends gathered together to pray,

time moved slowly as we dreaded the next day.

Medals, flowers, letters and song,

we honored you beautifully, but it all felt wrong.

Pieces of broken families came together as one,

wholeness in the emptiness,

but the journey had just begun.

Every day may not get easier,

some days may knock us down.

But we will get up each time,

and find a reason not to frown.

It was time to go again,

I packed by bags and headed east.

I flew back to my life in New York,

and day by day I’ll search for peace.
